This region hike is based on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour. Sydney Harbour National Park protects a number of islands and foreshore areas around one of the world's most famous harbours. The park is home to superb swimming spots, bushwalking tracks and picnic areas. These walks may include 1. Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay 2. Rose Bay to Neilson Park 3. North Head Fairfax Walk. A choice may be available.
We plan to visit the Vivid Light Walk in and around The Rocks, Circular Quay, Opera House and Botanical Gardens on Saturday evening. After we meet on Saturday morning, we plan to travel to and complete a short harbour walk, travel to and check in at Cockatoo Island approx. 2 pm, set up camp and locker hire and return to Circular Quay by ferry. We would return to Cockatoo Island on the 9 pm or 10 pm ferry. On Sunday morning, showers and breakfast, check out (depart campground), travel by ferry and complete a short harbour walk, before we return to the meeting point.
The campground is Cockatoo Island. The island is managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust “Harbour Trust”. Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour. It's located at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers and takes approximately 10 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay.
An estimate of the distance would be 15 km or more over two days on footpaths and bush tracks. Public transport is available to and from the venue. We are going to be using multiple modes of transport.
Pay on the day for your camping fees at Cockatoo Island campground $12.50 per person Additional cost: bring your opal card for public transport, Locker hire approx $8 and Self catering applies. Opal card daily cap Saturday (Concession $7.70 and Adult $15.40) Sunday (Concession $2.60 and Adult $2.60)
The selected walks are graded easy medium however there are climbs over the headland which can be tiring on sunny days. Sun protection and hydration will be a focus over the weekend. There is road access and drinking water at regular intervals. If the Scouts would like to swim there should be time over the weekend. This would be under direct adult supervision in addition to the buddy system. If you would like to swim please bring swimmers, boardshorts and towel.
This hike is aimed at Scouts and Venturers. Please note Leaders, Rovers and Parents are welcome to join us. Youth members can participate without their section leaders as activity leaders provide direct and or remote supervision for the duration. Participants coming by train are encouraged to travel in small groups and travel in the guard's carriage marked with a blue light. Scout uniform is not required however please wear your scarf.
