The State Water Activities Centre (SWASH) is running this two day activity (not staying overnight) to support members obtain Trained Participant in Canoeing on Grade 1 rivers. Equipment is supplied. Additional Information

The purpose of this two day activity is to support members obtain trained Participant in Canoeing on Grade 1 rivers. Some of the practical aspects we will be learning and practicing are different canoe strokes, recovering from a capsize, being towed in a canoe and completing water rescues.

To become a trained participant in Canoeing Grade 1, you will need the following modules which we will cover over the two days:

  • Paddle a canoe on moving water up to Grade 1 rivers SISOCNE003
  • Trained Participant Core Program
  • Perform basic water rescues (you must be able to swim unaided to achieve this)
  • Navigate in tracked environments

Note: You will also need a current first aid certificate which will need to be obtained outside this activity and emailed to training@nsw.scouts.com.au

To support you in obtaining each of the modules, you will need to:

Your logbook

  • Bring your up to date log book

Complete Workbooks

You will need to complete the ‘pre-program’ component of each of the following workbooks (see attached) along with a fictitious incident report (template attached) and bring along to the workshop, unless you already have that module recorded in Scoutlink:

  • Basic Water Rescue – Safe Participant Folio
  • Scoutskills Prior Acheivement Recognition – TP Core
  • Paddling Flat Water – Safe Participant

You will also need to bring along evidence you have complete any online training specified in these documents.

During the activity, you will get wet. You will need to wear/bring:

  • any medication you require
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • morning tea
  • water bottle
  • sunsafe clothing (long sleeves recommended)
  • wear fully enclosed shoes that will get wet (no crocs, thongs etc)
  • dry clothes to travel home in
    • The Water Activities Centre will provide you with a PFD to wear on the day and a sausage sizzle and can of soft drink for lunch both days.
    • Activities are subject to suitable weather conditions. If for any reason the event is cancelled, you will be able to rebook or obtain a refund. If you are unable to attend after registering, you will not be entitled to a refund.
