Splashdown #9 - Grafton Canoe Regatta - 15-17 March 2024

Are you keen to learn canoeing skills?  Or participate in a canoe journey?  Choose your own adventure!

This camp is designed to give Scouts basic canoe skills - water safety, paddling strokes and deep-water rescue techniques etc, in line with requirements for OAS Paddling Level 1-4.  As well as the opportunity to plan and participate in a journey (STA).

This is a self-catered camp so all food and drink will be need to be provided by the participants.  It is recommended to work in a patrol and organise your menus before camp.  Bring your own cooking facilities, and wash up stations will be provided at the hall.

The camp site will be at Grafton Scout Hall and open for set up from 4-00pm Friday.

The cost covers camping fee and admin fees.

PARTICIPANTS NEED TO BRING - 

- full scout uniform.

- own food and drink.

- mess kit and cooking gear (lightweight), plate, bowl, cup, cutlery and a tea towel.

- sleeping bag, sleeping mat, pillow.

- clothes to wear in the canoes (these will get wet) boardies and rash shirt would be good.

- footwear to wear in the canoes (these will get wet) - wet shoes, old runners, dive booties etc - not crocs, thongs or slip on's

- clothes and footwear to change into and wear around camp - not thongs or crocs - (footwear must be worn at all times on this camp).

- wide brim hat - (no caps).

- warm jacket or jumper and rain coat.

- towels X 2.

- personal first aid kit - with sunscreen and insect repellent.

- plastic bag to put wet clothes in.

- best scout behaviour - sense of fun and adventure.

- trophies to be won - boys = most dramatic capsize - girls = most stylish capsize - so get your act worked out and rehearsed.

SCOUT UNITS NEED TO PROVIDE - 

- canoes, paddles, PFD's that fit all participants. PLEASE NOTE - (PFD's need to be type 50 (old type 2) in hi visibility colours - type 50+ (old type 3) usually blue in colour are not suitable for this camp). PFD's must be worn at all times while in or on the water at this camp!

- tents for all participants.

- unit flags and stand.

- SCOUT LEADERS - please contact me if your unit has more canoes than you require or if your unit requires more.

- SCOUT LEADERS - please familiarise yourself with the document "canoeing and kayaking for scouts and venturers in the northern rivers district" - this document is the basis of what is taught on this camp - go over the relevant points with your troop before the camp. It can be found on the North Coast region web site under - Activities - Activity resources   

- we need to see all canoe qualified leaders at this camp - lets get our scouts out on the water - safely and having fun!!!!
