Brief Summary:
Far North Coast Region – Skills Weekend Overview Plan is to provide training in abseiling (Saturday) and cycling easy off road and on road (Sunday). Wes will also be available to complete RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) across a range of areas as well over the weekend. Outcome is to look to get leaders qualification in abseiling, and cycling via direct participation. Also look at providing RPL opportunities for bushwalking, canoeing or other activities where leaders have existing skills. If would be great for you to prepare and complete some information before the weekend as laid out below. As a note – For those wanting to lead Abseiling activities leaders will need to work towards Guide qualifications under SIS Vet system. If you are looking at getting Guide qualifications please contact me directly so we can map out a pathway for you to follow as it is a little complicated. Canoeing, Bushwalking, Cycling and other low risk activities can let led with Scouts Skills (internal Scout qualifications).

Far North Coast Region – Skills Weekend

Note: the top building include training room, kitchen and bunk rooms are currently being refurbished and are not available over this weekend. The Hatcher hut will be used for toilets, showers and kitchen.

You need to bring:

Your personal gear including camping, clothing, pens and paper.

We will provide:

All activity gear.

Catering for participants from Saturday breakfast to afternoon tea Sunday, based on your booking.

Schedule:

Friday night: Set up, have a chat and go to the pub or self cater for dinner (not included). Remember, it's a very busy day Saturday so you want an early night.

Saturday: Training and assessing in abseiling skills. This will include considerable time on the cliffs. Attendees are welcome to stay saturday night, even if they're not cycling on Sunday. Saturday night is catered at Camp Eagle Eye.

Sunday: On and off road cycling skills with a focus on assessing current skills.

Wes is also available throughout the weekend to assist our leaders in RPL for Safe Participant or Trained Participant in Core, Bushwalking and Canoeing. You must bring your paperwork including up to date log book. Here's a blank template for you.

To make the most of this weekend YOU need to do the pre-activity work. We will be spending more time on doing, less on paperwork.

Pre-Activity Work Summary

  1. Abseiling Safe Participant Level – Pre-Skills Weekend what to complete
    1. Go Through Safe Participant Power Point Presentation – Presentation is in Dropbox
    2. Review and look to learn knots – see knots document in Dropbox
    3. Fill in what you can of the Safe Participant Workbook (Theory knowledge) – Workbook in Dropbox.
    4. Note – abseiling practical completed on the weekend.
  2. Abseiling Trained Participant, Assistant Guide and Guide requirements
    1. Attached are the two workbooks outlining the theory and knowledge requirements for these levels. Workbooks are in Dropbox.
    2. Competency is required in rigging and rescue skills to a high level in order to achieve these qualifications.
    3. Logbook of abseiling is required.
    4. Practical demonstration on weekend of rigging and rescue skills as per the workbooks.
  3. Trained Participant Cycling Off Road Easy Conditions (or On Road Light Traffic)
    1. Logbook of cycling (off track and/or on road). A logbook template is in Dropbox.
    2. Review the relevant Trained Participant Workbook – Workbooks are in Dropbox.
    3. Think about what you would have in a Cycle Repair Kit
    4. We will cover and performing bike maintenance and repairs.
    5. Need a Cycling Activity Plan - should include a navigation plan and mapping plan (using a range of different maps). Activity Plan Template is in Dropbox.
    6. Complete a cycling Risk Assessment - Sample Risk Assessment is in Dropbox.

 

Other paperwork for RPL qualifications:

  1. Trained Participant Core
    1. Complete the TP Core workbook. (If you need assistance of guidance with this completing this please let me know). Workbook is located in Dropbox.
    2. You will need to complete the following online e-Learning modules on Scout Central:
      1. WHS for Scouting SP WHS
      2. Work Skills for Recreation AA WORK REC
      3. Assisting in Conduction Outdoor Recreation Sessions  AA ASSIST
      4. Follow Environmental Impact Practices  AA ENVIRO
      5. Camping Skills   SA SITE
    3. You will need to have completed SCOUTING ADVENTURE.
    4. You will also need a current first aid certificate.
    5. You will need a camping logbook. A logbook template is in Dropbox.
    6. Note - you can use the risk assessment for your bushwalking activity when completing this workbook.
  1. Trained Participant Canoeing RPL
    1. Need to have completed E-Learning on Scout Central – PADDLING SKILLS
    2. Complete Safe Participant Workbook (theory knowledge) – Workbook is in Dropbox.
    3. You will need a canoeing logbook. Logbook to needs to contain at least 3 canoe trips within the last 2 to years. A logbook template is in Dropbox.
    4. Put together a Gear List {group and personal}
    5. Have videos of you performing deep water rescues x 3.
    6. Have evidence of performing basic water rescues (skills as per workbook)
  2. Trained Participant Bushwalking RPL
    1. There are 3 levels and each depends on experience and your logbook as follows:
      1. Trained Participant Bushwalking Tracked – Day walking qualification. Need several day walks on tracks up to grade 3 withing the last 2 years
      2. Trained Participant Difficult Tracked – Overnight walking qualification. Need at least one overnight walk within the last two years along with other walking on tracks up to and including grade 4.
      3. Trained Participant Difficult Tracked – Multi day walking qualification. Need at least one three day and two night walk within the last two years along with other walking on tracks up to and including Grade 5 along with some off track walking experience.
    2. You will need a bushwalking logbook. A logbook template is located in Dropbox.
    3. You need at least 1 bushwalking activity plan set (Activity Plan, Risk Assessment, Operoo / E1 form and briefing notes).
