Day 1 - meet at venue at 9am sharp for a day of fun learning to paddle in a calm, flat water environment on the beautiful Nepean River. Participants will need to wear uniform to and from the venue and bring the following: - Lunch, Snacks, Drink, Water Bottle, 2 towels, change of clothes, warm jumper, water shoes, knee pads or thick foam(for kneeling in the boat they have a hard bottom), rash vest, swimmers, boardies, goggles, sunscreen, hat and a copy of the weekend weather report (try willy weather on the web for Penrith. Participants without water shoes and hat will not be permitted to participate.
You will learn how to fit your pfd/life jacket correctly, how to select the right paddle, what paddle strokes to use and when, practice paddle strokes, learn how to self rescue, talk about the environment and weather in regard to boating, talk about planning for a trip, navigation, do a deep water rescue, learn how to raft up and swap boats and places in the boat and get in plenty of practice paddling in a safe environment.
Day 2 - Today we will be going on a round trip down the river to practice the skills we learned on day 1. Pack your lunch and essentials in a waterproof bag! Wear 3/4 pants or long boardies if you have them and a long sleeved rashie if you have one to avoid sunburn. Hats, sunscreen and enclosed joggers or water shoes are a must. LEAVE THE CROCS AT HOME (they are not suitable for this activity)!
Scouts bring your green book aloong for your sign offs. Venturers, Rovers and Adults attending the weekend need to bring their log book for updating. You will also need to go to Scout Central Training to complete the ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES TRAINING - VET OUTCOMES modules and Canoeing E-Learning . If you expect to RPL to a Level 2 qualification, your log book must have evidence of a number of canoeing activities over a period of time. If you do not have a number of canoeing activities in your log book, a Level 1 RPL workbook will be offered if sufficient practical canoeing skills can be demonstrated. A statement of participation, noting elements covered will be provided to youth and adult participants. If adults and Venturers already have Level 1 Bushwalking qualification please let us know on the E1. By attending this weekend, adults will cover the practical components required for either SIS Canoeing or Scout Skills - Canoeing and discuss the theory requirements for canoeing. The balance of the requirements can be covered via RPL process.
