This course will run 9am to 4pm on Sat 5/4, Sun 6/4, Sat 12/4, Sun 13/4, Sat 26/4 & Sun 27/4.
During this time, we will be learning to sail on Lane Cover River and Sydney Harbour, mainly around Cockatoo Island.
Over this course, we will cover and practice:
- Preparing to sail (clothing, site selection, conditions, risk assessment, communications on the water)
- Rigging
- Launching
- Sailing a marked course in light to moderate wind conditions (Waterway rules, manoeuvring and negotiating obstacles, understanding wind)
- Recovering an overboard crew member
- Recovering from a capsize
- Controlling a sailboat under tow
- Landing and securing sail boat
During the activity, you will get wet. You will need to wear/bring:
- pealess whistle
- long hair will need to be tied back
- shackle key
- current logbook
- any medication you require
- sunscreen
- hat
- morning/afternoon tea
- water bottle
- sunsafe clothing (long sleeves recommended)
- wear fully enclosed shoes that will get wet (no crocs, thongs etc)
- dry bag with carabiner for anything you want to take on sailboat
- dry clothes to travel home in
- The Water Activities Centre will provide you with a PFD to wear on the day and a sausage sizzle and can of soft drink for lunch both every day.
- Activities are subject to suitable weather conditions. If for any reason the event is cancelled, you will be able to rebook or obtain a refund. If you are unable to attend after registering, you will not be entitled to a refund.
To become a Trained Participant in Sailing light to moderate winds, in addition to being assessed as competent in sailing, you will need to have:
- Trained Participant Core Program
- Perform basic water rescues (you must be able to swim unaided to achieve this)
- A current first aid certificate
We will not be running these additional units as part of this sailing course, but can support in you obtaining these. Please let us know if you need support in obtaining these additional units.
