Brief Summary:
This activity will present participants with an opportunity to represent Scouts Australia in a major Paddling Community Event. It will also present a whitewater kayaking knowledge, skill, abilities and experience development opportunity for use as evidence for OAS stage progressions and accomplishment of Scout Skills and VET kayak qualifications (Safe Participant, Trained Participant, Assistant Guide or Guide). The activity will also be a skills refresher for those already qualified and seeking currency.
Additional Information

Aim. This activity is aimed at providing participants from Scouts Austtralia Paddle Community (Scouts. Venturers, Rovers and Leaders/Adult Helpers) with opportunity:

  • to represent Scouts Australia and compete in a major Australian Whitewater paddle community race (https://www.learntokayak.net/contents/en-us/d2045760961.html)
  • to maintain a safe, competent and networked Scouting white-water paddling community capable of supporting, enabling and facilitating Youth paddling opportunities.
  • To present an opportunity for development of foundation skills, knowledge, attitudes and abilities/experience necessary to enable progress towards paddling competency and water activity supervision capacity and compliance required to plan and lead safe, fun, challenging and rewarding paddling activities in white-waters up to and including Grade 2 waterways. 
  • To provide opportunity to accumulate logged performance evidence to contribute towards currency and/or qualification in Scout and/or VET Flat, Moving and Whitewater paddling Units of Competency (Safe Participant, Trained Participant, Assistant Guide and Guide).

Scheduling. This activity iis scheduled for the weekend of Friday 23 to Sunday 25 August 2024 (There will be an opportunity to paddle Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday).

Activity Location. This activity will be conducted on the King River River between Lake William Hovell to Cheshunt South (https://www.waterwaysguide.org.au/section-detail/18271).

Accommodation. Dormitory style accommodation at King River Camp, 953 Upper King River Road, Cheshunt, Vic 3678 (http://kingrivercamp.org.au/contact-us/). Accomodation is booked for registered activity participants for Friday and Saturday night. participants will have access to a camp kitchen for preparation of meals, but should bring all cooking utensils (The activity cost above is for the dormitory accommodation).

Catering. This activity will be self-catered by participants. Particiopants should bring Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and water for consumption during allocated breaks (There is no scope to buy takeway food during breaks, as there are no shops in vicinity). 

Transport. Own means or car-pooling as arranged with participants from similar areas. Participants are known to be attending from Sydney, Canberra and Nowra. An approrpiate fuel contribution shoud be made to drivers.

Activity Pre-requisites. Those who attend this activity will need to have completed a whitewater paddling workshop or have completed a recent Guide run paddle and rescue skills development package or have Guide witnessed paddle and rescue skills/experience. Race participants will need to have the confidence and skills to safely paddle Grade 2 whitewater. 

Activity Cost. The Scout activity cost is $58.00 (This covers event registration and accommodation. Scout Event registrations close 09 August 24 to allow accommodation to be confirmed). Race and clinic registration are seperate, as per below.

Race Participation. Race participants will need to register at: https://www.learntokayak.net/contents/en-us/d2045760963.html (Cost on registration is $36.36 per person, which is not included in the activity cost and should be paid at the point of registration).

Equipment. Participants will require a servicable kayak, paddle, PFD, whistle, wetsuit (or dry suit), water shoes, Cag / rain coat, barrels/floatation, white-water helmet, sleeping gear, food, cooking gear, etc. Kayaks intended to be used will need to be a suitable modern plastic creeker hull design, of no longer than 2.9m (It would be useful if boat type and make could be confirmed as part of registration).
