National Alpine School

Aim: To strengthen the Scouting Alpine Guiding community, though a collaborative learning approach. Broadening the alpine skill base, focusing on Backcountry Alpine Guide level skills. to allow evidence demonstration for use towards guide Qualifications.

Who: Alpine Trained Participants looking to achieve Backcountry Alpine Guide endorsement. Existing Backcountry Alpine Guides who would like to join in, support the school and collaboratively expand their knowledge base.

When: Saturday14th September to Sunday 22nd September 2024

Where: Saturday to Tuesday, camping at the Alpine Centre Jindabyne.

What:   Saturday:

    3:00pm arrive at Alpine Centre Jindabyne, Welcome, set up tent.

Sunday:

6:45 am Assemble for daily briefing.

7:00 am Depart Alpine Centre for Perisher Nordic Trails

3:00 pm Return to Alpine Centre

Monday:

6:45 am Assemble for daily briefing.

7:00 am Depart Alpine Centre for Perisher side country.

3:00 pm Return to Alpine Centre

Tuesday:

5:30 am Reveille

6:45 am Assemble for daily briefing.

7:00 am Depart Alpine Centre for Thredbo. Drive to Thredbo.

8:30 am Ride Kosciuszko Chairlift to Eagles Nest.

Likely travel Route: Ski past North Rams Head, through Ethridge Gap. Across Rawson Pass and then Muellers Pass. Skirt around Mount Northcote on its western flank. Across Northcote Pass. Drop into little Austria.

2:00 pm Arrive & Pitch camp.

Wednesday to Friday:

Ski / Snow Shoe, Snow Craft, Mountain Survival and Alpine Guiding Skills on the Main Range.

Saturday:

8:00am Depart for Thredbo

Sunday:

Sleep in

9:00 am Debrief and finalise assessment documentation

10:00 am Depart Alpine Centre by 10:00am

Cost: All participates $150. (Alpine Centre camping fee)

Administration / logisitics:

  • Transport, Park entry, lift tickets, food, and gear hire are NOT included in the price
  • Catering will not be supplied. This is a self-catered trip, as coordinated between patrol / tent members.
  • It is important that all participances have adequate fitness and skill level for the trip. This is due to the fact that there will be long days of challenging skiing on the best slopes in Australia
  • The correct gear is important for an enjoyable trip. Participants will be responsible for their own gear. Telemark, AT gear or snowshoes are required. Tents must be 4 seasons. We will have a gear shakedown at the Alpine Centre prior the trip
  • Participants will require a valid Thredbo lift ticket for Ride on Kosciuszko Chairlift to Eagles Nest (You will need to purchase a Thredbo reusable ticket for $5.00 then purchase a Backcountry Access Pass, allow for a cost of approximately $60, booking can only be made a maximum of two days in advance, best done online).
