Brief Summary:
Flat water canoe skills (canoe course). Suitable for Scouts and older. Camping at Bendeela Camping Area, Kangaroo Valley. This is a self cater weekend (BYO camping and cooking gear & all food). Canoes, paddles & PFDs (life jackets) to be arranged through your group (not provided as part of the course). Complete portions of Paddle badgework. Venturers & older can gain evidence for canoeing qualifications.
Additional Information

Saturday will cover paddling skills, recovery from capsize as well as safety and planning aspects (first aid, weather, navigation, knotting). Sunday will be a day paddle to further develop paddling skills and also will cover canoe journey equipment and packing. You'll need to pack gear so it stays dry for this day. It is important to attend both days to develop sufficient skills and knowledge. There will be an optional night paddle.

You will require:

  • a seat in a canoe, paddle & PFD (life jacket) (leaders from each group to arrange)
  • shoes to wear in the water (enclosed shoes, no thongs, sandals or crocs)
  • sun protection (T shirt or rashy, board shorts, hat, sunscreen)
  • food and drinks
  • towel
  • if glasses or sunnies are worn they should have a string to keep them on, you will be capsizing.
  • all camping & cooking gear + food for weekend (this is a self cater weekend).

This activity is suitable for scouts and older. Youth members should be able to complete Stage 3 paddling badge or components of higher stages. Venturers, Rovers & Leaders can use skills demonstrated towards Safe or Trained Participant (old level 1&2 canoeing) qualifications. Advise activity leaders if you want this.

A limited number of region canoes are available. Contact activity coordinator if required. $15 hire fee per canoe applies. Glenn Austin 0417 272 978 glenn.austin@nsw.scouts.com.au
