Brief Summary:
Woronora River canoe journey to The Needles with overnight camping at Gooyong Camping area. Participants need to be at least OAS Paddling Stage 2. The activity is mildly challenging. The main challenge will be paddling back down river on Sunday afternoon. As it is high tide at 1136 HRS (1.71m) the paddle back to the boat ramp will be with the current. However, depending on the day local winds can cause headwind and chop on the water. If the headwind is too strong for our participants, we can exit at Woronora boat ramp Prince Edward Park. That will save several kilometers of paddling.
Additional Information

We will use 1st Wearne Bay scouts' canoes and paddles. Each member will be wearing a PFD (personal flotation device), if you have your own device please bring it, otherwise one will be provided.

All leaders will carry a phone in a dry bag accessible from the water. Mobile reception is expected in the area.

There will be a safety chat and dry demo before going on the water.

The activity will start and finish at Burnum Burnum boat ramp on the Woronora River and incorporates and overnight camp at Gooyong camping area. The next day, scouts will paddle upstream to The Needles. During the paddle canoeing skills will be practiced.

Participants must wear clothes appropriate to the temperature and be ready to get wet, including closed footwear, hat and sunscreen.

Participants must at all times when in the water wear either water shoes or old shoes that can get wet. All footwear must be fully enclosed footwear. Crocs, thongs and sandals are not acceptable.

Extra clothes should be available when needed – overnight camping and return to the boat ramp.

Participants will need to bring a at least 2l of water, more if hot weather is forecast, and some nibbles (cereal bars, fruits etc.) as a snack food.

Tie a 1m string to the bottle to tether it to the kayak so it is not lost on the river.

Each scout has to have a hand sanitizer.

Members advised to not attend if feeling unwell or if they have even mild symptoms i.e. fever, dry cough, tiredness.

Please minimise rubbish – all rubbish will need to be taken home with the Scout.

Water – 2 litres at least – more if it is hot - Tie a 1m string to the bottle to tether it to the kayak so it is not lost in the river

Have food before arriving at boat ramp on Friday evening. Bring enough food for Friday night supper, Saturday breakfast, morning tea and lunch as well as snacks for Saturday/Sunday.
