Brief Summary:
This is a Clean Up Australia Day activity. The activity involves an overnight canoe journey on the Georges River from Como to Picnic Point. It is aimed at Scouts, Ventures, Rovers and leaders. Event details are: Site Number: 55861 Site Name: Georges River Como to Picnic Point Please make a note of this - volunteers will need to register with Clean Up Australia for this event. The activity is open to current scout members whom have participated in a Hume Region Canoe skills weekend or similar, OR have recognized Canoe / Kayak qualifications, OR whom have a current canoe/kayak log. Total paddling distance is approximately 11km Bush camping on the banks of the river, there are NO facilities, there is NO vehicular access.
Additional Information

Canoeists, paddle up river stopping at various locations along the way collecting rubbish.  Rubbish generally includes anything that floats. Note that the river is tidal in this location.

Approximate paddling distance

  • Day one (1) is approximately 7.5km
  • Day two (2) is approximately 4.5km

Collected rubbish is usually transferred to an assisting motor boat, transferring the rubbish to designated collection points.

Drop of location: Scylla Bay boat ramp, Verona Range, Como

Pick up location. Foreshore reserve, across the road from 1st Picnic Point Scout Group 23 Carinya Rd, Picnic Point NSW. Please note, for people whom have participated in the event over the last 20 years, this is a new pickup location.  

Participants are to organize their own seat in a canoe, single bladed paddle and life jacket (PFD). This is best organised with your section leader.

The Hume Region has several Canadian style of canoes complete with paddles, life jackets (PFD) for a small fee.

Contact the activity coordinator a minimum of one (1) week prior to the activity to make arrange for the collection of any equipment.

All equipment must be returned in a cleaned and dry condition following the journey.

Note: parents/drivers are expected at arrive at the pick-up point at 2pm to assist in loading canoes and moving collected rubbish bags to the collection point. Our intention is to be leaving by 3pm. Your assistance will be appreciated.

  

  • This is a self-cater event. Participants are required to bring suitable meals, and snacks for the period. You MUST bring ONE (1) spare meal in case we cannot get back to the pickup location by the planned finish time.
  • As the waterway is tidal, it is recommended that each participant brings 10 litres of drinking water.

All gear and equipment must be packed in Canoe drums or dry bags in the event of a capsize. Participants must bring suitable: 

  • Hiking style tent that may be shared (same gender)
  • Sunglasses, hat and clothes while paddling providing protection from the weather elements including the sun, wind and rain.
  • Shoes (foot covering) that will STAY ON while swimming.
  • Wet weather gear.
  • Change of clothes & shoes while at camp
  • First aid kit. Sun burn cream, toiletries, toilet shovel, compass, torch,
  • Suitable sleeping bag and sleeping mat.
  • Make sure that you know how to use your Light weight cooking equipment and how to cook your meals. Bring eating utensils and cleaning products.
  • As this is a Clean Up Australia event, it is recommended that participants bring a pair of gardening gloves and a quantity of hand sanitiser.  Some people like the idea of using tongs or grabber tool, litter picker etc.  

 

We are still going on the activity in the event of forecast rain.

The activity will be cancelled in the following:

  • Severe Weather warning or Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for the local area
  • Flood warning is issued for the Georges River.
  • The area is impacted by bushfire.
