Brief Summary:
An opportunity for experienced canoeists to gain their trained participant in canoeing. This event is for currently registered Ventures, Rovers, Leaders and Adult helpers. Please see additional information for all details
Additional Information

The purpose of this day is to provide the opportunity for experienced canoeists to demonstrate their skills to support gaining trained participant in canoeing on either Flatwater. It is a combination of demonstrating your skills & ability in this session and your log book that determines guide signoff. Once the paperwork has been signed, you will need to submit the forms to state for final assement and review.

SC&T Region will provide canoes, paddles and PFD's.- You are welcome to bring your own

On the day, you will demonstrate practical skills including but not limited to:

  • Choosing and checking your gear before getting on the water
  • Consistently following safety procedures and safely negotiate hazards
  • Teamwork and communication skills and signals
  • Consistently controlling the direction of your canoe going forward, in reverse and sideways using a range of strokes
  • Completing two self-rescues following a capsize, swimming self and craft a maximum of 50 meters to shore
  • Completing 3 deep water rescues to assist a single capsized paddler using these techniques:
    • T (or x) rescue
    • Curl rescue
  • Provide one contact tow
  • Provide one tow using a towline with a quick release system

You will also demonstrate knowledge through:

  • Bringing gear/clothing appropriate for the conditions
  • Providing a safety brief (please bring a prepared written safety brief with you)
  • Participating in a group discussion on:
    • risks associated with canoeing
    • techniques for storing items in the canoe
    • International grading system
    • Scout Policies and Procedures for Adventurous Activities.

On the day, you need to bring your:

  • Up to date logbook
  • Completed canoe workbook if you are not already a safe participant in canoeing. See attached documents

In addition to demonstrating your canoeing skills, to become a trained participant you also need:

  • Core modules (We can assist if required, just let us know in advance)
  • Basic water rescues (You need to enrol in this independently- If we get the time, we can compleate this but not garenteeded)
  • Current first aid cert (You need to enrol in this independently)
  • Navigate in tracked environments (You need to enrol in this independently)

A sausage sizzle and can of drink will be provided for lunch. 

Activities are subject to suitable weather conditions. If for any reason the event is cancelled, you will be able to rebook or obtain a refund. If you are unable to attend after registering, you will not be entitled to a refund.
