Scouts from Units across Parramatta District are hiking the Great North Walk.

Description:

The Scouts will be hiking the section of the Great North Walk (GNW) starting from Hornsby Station, camping overnight at Crosslands Reserve, and finishing at Cowan Station. 

Parents can drop their Scouts to the start point of the hike (8:20am at Hornsby Station) or Scouts can travel with Leaders on public transport. The Leaders will be departing from the M2 Barclay Road bus stop at 7:00am.

Parents can collect their Scouts from the end point of the hike (4pm at Cowan Station) or Scouts can travel with Leaders on Public transport. The Leaders expect to be returning to the M2 Barclay Road bus stop at 5pm.   

The hike is approximately 32km walking distance and suitable for hikers with moderate experience (OAS Bushwalking stage 3 minimum). The approximate route for the hike is :-

Cost:

  • $15 for camping costs
  • $10 on Opal card if travelling on public transport to and from the hike.

 

Wear:

  • Scout shirt and scarf
  • Hat (full brim recommended)
  • comfortable shorts/pants
  • comfortable shoes suitable for hiking

 

Bring:

Hiking pack containing:

  • hiking tent (can be shared between 2-3 Scouts)
  • sleeping bag
  • sleeping mat
  • food for 2 days (Saturday lunch & dinner, Sunday breakfast & lunch and snacks)
  • spare clothing (incl. warm clothing)
  • torch/headlamp
  • stove and fuel (can be shared by a number of Scouts)
  • personal toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, sunscreen, insect repellent)
  • water bottle (minimum 2L)
  • rain coat
  • small personal First Aid kit
  • money to buy snacks (optional)

The 1st North Rocks Scout Unit has hiking packs and 3-person hiking tents that are available to hire - please discuss with Jumbuck (first come, first served).
