What You’ll Learn

  • Core flatwater paddling skills for safe, efficient canoe handling
  • Basic Water Rescues — including self‑rescue and assisting others
  • Launching, landing, and manoeuvring in varied conditions
  • Safety planning, risk management, and group supervision
  • Applying Scouts NSW water activity standards and procedures

By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • Meet TP – Paddling requirements or
  • Confidently supervise youth swimming in enclosed/unpatrolled flatwater environments in accordance with Scouts NSW policy

Who Should Attend

  • Leaders and adult members seeking TP – Paddling accreditation
  • Leaders wishing to gain BWR competency to expand their unit’s safe water‑based program
  • Anyone needing a BWR refresher to maintain currency

Important — TP Core Requirement

If you do not already hold TP Core, you will need to complete it (before or alongside your paddling folio) to be awarded TP – Paddling.


 What to Bring

For all participants:

  • Folio(s) / Workbook(s) for Basic Water Rescues and/or TP – Paddling (printed or on a device you can use on the water)
  • SunSmart gear: broad‑brimmed/legionnaire hat, SPF 30+ sunscreen, sun‑protective clothing, sunglasses
  • Water activity clothing: quick‑dry shirt/shorts, enclosed water shoes, change of dry clothes, towel
  • Hydration & snacks: full water bottle, light snacks
  • Personal items: medications (if needed), waterproof/dry bag, notebook & pen (optional)

If using RPL:

  • Evidence of current skills (logbooks, activity plans, prior certificates, photos)

Provided on the day:

  • Canoes, paddles, PFDs (lifejackets)
  • Instruction and assessment by qualified trainers
