Brief Summary:
The State Water Activities Centre (SWASH) is running a two-weekend workshop to support members obtain Trained Participant in Flatwater Canoeing. Sat 17th Jan - Day only at SWASH AND Sat 31st - Sun 1st Feb - overnight expedition. Canoes, PFD's supplied - see gear list for full details. Additional Information

The purpose of this activity is to support members obtain Trained Participant in Canoeing on Flatwater.
Over the 2 weekends, we will cover:
  • Safety clothing and equipment
  • Getting in and out of a canoe safely
  • Different paddle strokes and posture
  • Hazards on the water and how to negotiate them and mitigate risk
  • Deep water and drag in rescues
  • Rafting up
  • Towing (quick release and contact)
  • Overnight expedition
  • Basic Water Rescues (you need to be able to swim unaided to achieve this)
  • Scout policies and procedures
 In addition to demonstrating your competence in canoeing, to become a safe or trained participant in canoeing, you also need to have:
  • a logbook with other canoeing trips logged (these trips can be completed and submitted after this course)
  • Basic Water Rescues which we will cover as part of this event
  • Completed workbooks attached to this event (note: if you already have basic water rescues, you do not need to complete the workbook)
And
  • Trained Participant Core Program * (must have current first aid cert to achieve)
  • Navigate Tracked Environments*
*We will not be running these additional units as part of this canoe course but can support in you obtaining these.
This workshop will be conducted over 2 weekends with the first weekend being a 1 day non-residential session at SWASH and the 2nd weekend being an overnight canoe expedition.
Weekend 1 - Sat 17th Jan at SWASH (Day only) 9am – 4pm
End of The Point Rd, Woolwich
This session will cover theory (activity planning inc gear list, route etc and risk assessment), paddling, deep water rescues and basic water rescues. To support you in obtaining each of the modules, you will need to to bring
Your logbook
  • Bring your up to date log-book
Complete Workbooks
You will need to complete the ‘pre-program’ component of each of the following workbooks (see attached) along with an incident report (template attached) and bring along to the workshop, unless you already have that module recorded in Scoutlink:
  • Basic Water Rescue – Safe Participant Folio
  • Paddling Flat Water – Safe Participant
You will also need to bring along evidence you have complete any online training specified in these documents.
During the activity, you will get wet. You will need to wear/bring:
  • any medication you require
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • morning tea
  • water bottle
  • sunsafe clothing (long sleeves recommended)
  • wear fully enclosed shoes that will get wet (no crocs, thongs etc)
  • dry clothes to travel home in
    • The Water Activities Centre will provide you with a Canoe with paddle, PFD to wear on the day and a sausage sizzle and can of soft drink for lunch both days.
 
Weekend 2 - Sat 31st Jan - Sun 1st Feb (Overnight expedition)
  • 9am Saturday - Meet at Epping Boatshed 150 Bowden St, Meadowbank to load canoes
  • Travel via convoy to Berowra Creek
  • 4pm Sunday - Return to Boatshed to unload
This will be an overnight canoe expedition, detailed planning will be part of the material covered on weekend 1, but the general plan will be:
  • Meet at Epping scouts Boatshed, Meadowbank in the morning to load canoes, select paddles and fit PFDS
  • Travel in convoy to Crosslands Reserve, Hornsby
  • Load and launch canoes
  • Paddle to Marramarra Creek - with alternative routes identified during the planning session
  • Overnight camp at a site with minimal facilities
  • Return to Crosslands Reserve, load canoes and return to Epping Scouts Boatshed
  • Unload, clean and pack away gear
  • Leave for home
 Activities are subject to suitable weather conditions. If for any reason the event is cancelled, you will be able to rebook or obtain a refund. If you are unable to attend after registering, you will not be entitled to a refund.
