Inland Route Summary
Distance: ~8.5 km. Time: 2.5 to 3 hours (Estimated arrival at camp: 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM).
Terrain: Wide, hard-packed gravel fire trails and sandy tracks.
Difficulty: Moderate (easier and faster than the Grade 5 coastal rock scramble).

Township (0.5 km): Start at the Rural Fire Station bus stop. Walk south on Flowers Drive and refill all water at Surf Circle Park.

Fire Trail Entry (1.5 km): Pass the historic cemetery and enter the Moonee Beach Track. This wide trail runs parallel to the coast but stays inland.

Mid-Point (4.5 km): Cross the back of Moonee Beach. Follow the inland management trails to maintain a steady 4 km/h pace.

Final Descent (1.5 km): Navigate the Grass Tree Track. This is the steepest section; use the fire trail to drop directly into Frazer Campground.

Sunday & Monday Summary

Sunday: Explore Snapper Point (whale watching) and view the Pink Caves from the headland during low tide (~11:30 AM).

Monday: Hike 8.5 km back to the Rural Fire Station stop. Catch the return Bus 99 (check Monday times, typically departures around 02:22 PM) to begin your trip back to Central.

Learning focus:

  • develop communication/teamwork
  • develop confidence/physical ability to carry a loaded pack
  • develop independence and knowledge of daily routines on overnight and multi day hikes

Warmer temps and humidity, moving to the coast due to increased fire risk inland.

Water can be refilled from safe water sources on the route, either purification tablets or a water filter are recommended

Toilets are available at campgrounds
