Brief Summary:
Venture Scout Canoe Journey 15–16 August
Additional Information

This overnight canoeing activity will see Venture Scouts paddle from Church Point to The Basin Campground and return, while developing advanced paddling, teamwork, navigation, and water safety skills. Participants will work together to plan and complete the journey safely and efficiently, sharing responsibilities for navigation, campsite setup, cooking, and group decision-making throughout the expedition.

An online theory and planning session will be held on 21 July to prepare participants for the activity. This session will cover route planning, weather and tide considerations, equipment requirements, safety procedures, group responsibilities, and canoe rescue techniques.

During the expedition, participants will practise and demonstrate canoe rescue techniques including capsize recovery, assisting other paddlers, and safe emergency response procedures. The activity is designed to build confidence and competency in preparation for qualifying expeditions and remote or indirect supervision opportunities.

Canoes, paddles, PFDs, barrels, tents, and hike-style cookers will be provided. Food for the activity is included in the event cost.

Gear pickup can be completed during the 1st Ermington Venture Scout Unit meeting on Wednesday 12 August.

Participation Requirements:

  • Must hold OAS Stage 3 Canoeing or higher before the activity
  • Must be a Scouts Australia Venture Scout or currently linking into Venture Scouts
  • Participants are expected to attend the online planning session and assist with journey planning, risk management, and team responsibilities during the expedition.
