Paddle Kayaking/Canoeing

On the weekend of 26-27 Nov 2022 Scouts will be undertaking an overnight Kayak/Canoe hike from Dust Hole Boat Ramp, Berowra to Camp Windeyer.  

We will Kayak/Canoe 7km up river, camp overnight and Kayak/Canoe back.  

For the Scout to take part in the weekend, there are a number of pre-requisites. 

1. Attend a Kayak/canoe training day on Sunday 20^th November.  
2. Scouts will be required to return to Drummoyne hall, 11 Dening St, Drummoyne NSW, both after the practice day and on the Sunday of the overnight hike to assist with unpacking the trailers, cleaning the boats and packing away.  
3. Parent involvement in transportation of Scouts is essential. Car pooling is highly encouraged.

Kayak/Canoe training day Sunday 20^th November 2022 

We will use kayaks, canoes and paddles. Each participant will be wearing a PFD (personal flotation device). 

At least 1 leader will carry a phone in a dry bag accessible from the water. Mobile reception is expected in the area.
There will be a safety discussion and dry demo before going on the water. 

 The activity will start at 9:45AM at our launch point at Wymston Parade, corner Bickleigh St, Abbotsford.  From here we will paddle across Hen and Chicken Bay, destination Cabarita Point, we may venture onto the Parramatta River and then paddle back.  

Scouts should expect to get wet, either from the weather, falling out of their boats, or going for a swim.

Scouts will need to be collected from Wymston Parade at around 3pm, transported back to the Drummoyne Scout Hall, 11 Dening St, Drummoyne NSW, assist in the unpacking of the trailers. End of the activity is expected to be at 4pm. 

Participants must wear - 

Appropriate clothing for the temperature/weather and be ready to get wet 

Enclosed footwear - at all times when in the water wear either water shoes or old shoes that can get wet. Crocs, thongs or sandles are not acceptable.

Participants must bring - 

Lunch for Sunday 

Water – 2 litres - Tie a 1m string to the bottle to tether it to the kayak so it is not lost in the river 

Snacks for Sunday 

Suncream to re-apply through the day 

Towel 

Spare clothing in a water tight bag in case they get wet.

Anybody over 12 years old and not vaccinated against Covid, is required to provide evidence of a negative RAT on the morning of the activity. 
  

Kayak/Canoe Overnight Hike Saturday to Sunday 26^th to 27^th November 2022

Participants MUST have attended the paddle the week prior.
Saturday 26^th November - The activity will start at 9-30am at Dust Hole Boat Ramp, Berowra. From there we will paddle to Camp Windeyer some 7 km upriver to camp for the night. Next day we will return the same way. 

Sunday 27^th November - Scouts will need to be picked up from Dust Hole Boat Ramp at 3-45pm, where they will need to be driven back to Drummoyne Scout Hall, 11 Dening St, Drummoyne NSW, to assist with the unpacking of trailers, cleaning down of the boats and carrying out a review of the weekend. We will be expected to finish at 5-30pm on Sunday 

Scouts will be expected to work in patrols that will be set on the online meeting, setting up tents - Scouts may be sharing tents on this camp and cooking meals on open fires and trangia stoves (Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, Sunday Lunch, Sunday late afternoon tea).

Lunch for Saturday – Please minimise rubbish – all rubbish will need to be taken home with the Scout

All clothes and sleeping bags must be placed in dry bags or similar. 

Scouts should consider acquiring a dry bag or 2, around 30 litres each, not bigger than 35l.
