Brief Summary:

Paddling the idilic Hawkesbury River on sea kayaks, Visiting islands. Camping in a remote campsite. Share the adventure with mates. All that and more, and while enjoying yourself learn how to live from your kayak.

Additional Information

This activity is an overnight kayaking trip, from Mooney Mooney Point to Gentlemans Halt and back.

We will use double sea kayaks. Each participant will be wearing a PFD (personal flotation device).

At least 1 leader will carry a phone in a dry bag accessible from the water. However, mobile reception is not expected in the area. At least one emergency PLB will be carried, as well as first aid kits.

There will be a safety discussion and dry demo before going on the water.

Prerequisites:

* Participants MUST have done a day of kayaking before of at least 7km/3hs duration.

* Participants MUST have attended a lightweight overnight camp.

* Participants MUST be able to paddle the 12km, spread over the day, maintaining a positive attitude, bearing in mind it may be physically demanding, depending on experience and fitness level.

Saturday 16th January - The activity will start at 9-30am at Mooney Mooney Boat Ramp. From there we will paddle to Gentlemans Halt campground some 11 km away to camp for the night. Next day we will return the same way.

Sunday 17th January - Participants will need to be picked up from Mooney Mooney Boat Ramp at 3pm.

Participants will be expected to work in patrols that will be set during the online meeting. They will be sharing and setting up tents and will cook their meals, they will need to provide their own sleeping tents and cooking gear and ingredients (Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast).

Participants should expect to get wet, either from the weather, falling out of their boats, or going for a swim.

Kayaks (if you would like to use your own, please contact the activity organiser for review), PFDs and paddles will be provided.

There will be a limited number of dry bags to borrow.

Participants must wear -

Appropriate clothing for the temperature/weather and be ready to get wet

Enclosed footwear - at all times when in the water wear either water shoes or old shoes that can get wet. Crocs or thongs are not acceptable.

Participants must bring -

Lunch for both days, dinner for Saturday night and breakfast for Sunday. Please, minimize rubbish, all rubbish will need to be taken home.

Drinking Water – 5 litres for drinking– more if it is hot + 1 litre to cook. There is no water at the campsite - Tie a 1m string to the bottle to tether it to the kayak so it is not lost in the river. You can use used 2L soda soft drink bottles or bladder soft bottles for extra water.

Personal toileting – toilet paper, trowel – note the intended location has a drop toilet, however you should be prepared for the toilet to be unavailable

Participants will need to bring tent and stove. Patrols to share gear will be decided during the online meeting.

All clothes and sleeping bags must be placed in dry bags or similar. Participants should consider acquiring a dry bag or two, around 30 litres each, not bigger than 35l. If you cannot acquire a dry bag there will be a limited number of dry bags that can be provided.

Anybody over 12 years old and not vaccinated against Covid, is required to provide evidence of a negative RAT on the morning of the activity.
