Brief Summary:
Cub Day Out 2026 – Cockatoo Island Cockatoo Island is an UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Sydney Harbour with a rich history during both the convict and industrial eras in the history of Sydney. It is open to the public, easy reachable via ferry, full of information boards and it is a safe environment for Cub Scout aged children. Just like the CDO in 2024, the day will be self-guided by the individual Cub Scout sections. An information booklet and map will be provided, it contains a suggested pathway over the island and a knowledge quiz which can be used for a group SIA project.

Times
There is no strict starting and finish time, the registration booth will be there between 09:30 and 15:00 for check-in and check-out.

Travel
The F3 and F8 ferries operate from Barangaroo Wharf, Circular Quay Wharf and wharfs upstream on the Paramatta river. See https://transportnsw.info/travel-info/ways-to-get-around/ferry for the timetable. 

Barangaroo wharf is 1.3km / 30min from Townhall station and 700m / 15min from Wynyard station. 
Circular Quay wharf is next to Circular Quay station.

Groups will be providing their travel arrangements and details of leaders supporting through the group section here on EMS.

Cost
For Cub Scouts: $8 for a badge and a SIA booklet.
For leaders: $0 for a badge, a SIA booklet and two maps.
For adult helpers: $0

Extra badges: $3
Extra SIA booklet: $1.50

Check-in and check-out
When arriving on the island, check-in when leaving the jetty.
You will get the booklets and the maps during the check-in.

When leaving the island, check-out before going to the jetty.
You will get the badges during the checkout.

Instructions for cub scouts
Wear: Wear your full cub scout uniform including scarf, enclosed shoes and a wide-brimmed hat.
Bring: Bring a backpack with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, a drink bottle (there are many locations where you can fill it up)
Sun smart: Put on sun-screen when needed.
Wet weather: Bring a raincoat in case the weather is iffy.
Travel: Bring your Opal card with at least $5 on it. Travel on Sunday's is capped at $4.80 for children.
SIA Booklet: You will get a SIA booklet with, so bring a pen and optional small clipboard so you can write easy.

Instructions for parents
Your child will travel on public transport to Cockatoo Island. Please make sure that their Opal card has at least $5 on it.
Please confirm with the exact times and locations for departure and return with the section leader.

Instructions for section leaders

  • We will order badges, SIA booklets and maps for every registered leader and paid-for cub scout on Saturday 14 March at 23:59.
  • Check-in when you arrive at the ferry and you will get the maps and the SIA booklets.
    Check-out when you leave to the ferry and you will get the badges.
  • A First Aider will be available on Cockatoo Island. However you will be responsible to bring a first aid kit and to provide first aid for minor issues. See the Risk Assignment for instructions.
  • You will need to be aware of the medical needs of your cub scouts, like allergies and asthma, including the carrying of the EpiPen and puffers.
  • Only cub scouts registered in EMS with the completed parent permission are allowed to come.
